Abstract: While the economy benefits from the progress of digitalization, privacy has become a major concern. We investigate how customers of a food delivery platform respond to a shock to the perceived security of their privacy. Exploiting a difference-in-difference specification, we find that after an unexpected major information leakage event, customers switched from digital payments to cash. Besides, more consumers quit the online platform. However, this pattern only persisted in the short term. The leakage had little impact on the adoption of the platform in the long run, and the gap between digital payments and cash gradually shrank in the long run. The results provide supporting evidence for consumers' preference for convenience over privacy concerns. Our findings have important policy implications.
